Concerts This Weekend
WMNF Presents Todd Snider Friday February 5th
The Excitement Plan, Snider's latest long player, features a laid- back groove and its top- shelf lyrics are being called Snider's best work yet. "This music is sorta JJ Cale meets Jerry Jeff Walker sounding with words that would hopefully impress Shel Silverstein, Bobby Bare, Chuck Berry, Kris Kristofferson or Randy Newman,” Snider says. With his contributions of stellar guitar, piano and harmonica, his musicianship shares the spotlight as easily as his treasured lyrics. Snider is a vociferous musician whose fans know him to be quite the workhorse. His acclaimed 2006 release, The Devil You Know found the barefoot troubadour performing live on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Late Night with David Letterman and the CD appeared on numerous year-end Top 10 lists including Spin, Blender and Rolling Stone. More recently, last year’s Peace Queer EP--a concept record featuring all the peace, love and anarchy Snider is known for--inspired Blender to say he “morphed from a wisecracking country-ish journeyman to the sharpest and funniest protest singer working today." The EP spent five weeks at number one on the Americana chart and Spin Magazine dubbed him, "One of roots music's slyest, smartest songwriters." http://www.toddsnider.net/

Opening is Jacksonville native Rebecca Zapen, a recent transplant to St. Petersburg, has been playing guitar, violin and ukulele since childhood, when her musical parents played plenty of classical tunes around the house. Her most recent album, Japanese Bathhouse, was inspired by -- you guessed it -- a Japanese bathhouse, and is full of quirky, jazzy ditties that sound like exquisite little snippets of an indie-film soundtrack. www.zapen.com/

Doors open at 6:00p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.

WMNF Presents - Louisiana Saturday Night Party
Big Sam's Funky Nation, brass-driven funk, is a driving force of urban funk. Ryan White, of the Oregonian, says the band is “tight enough (and hot enough) to turn coal into a diamond!” The band is led by trombone powerhouse, Big Sam Williams, formerly the trombonist for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, who the San Francisco Chronicle calls “the top man on the slide trombone in the birthplace of jazz.” Combining his distinctive trombone riffs with a call-and-response MC style, Big Sam refuses to let the audience sit still. Between the band’s solos and his trombone riffs, Big Sam second-lines (a uniquely New Orleans style of street-dance) and gets the crowd going. Big Sam’s Funky Nation is not a one man show; the members of the Funky Nation, a group of well trained and experienced musicians with impressive credentials of their own, meet the challenges of their funky band leader. BSFN masterfully combines a rock sensibility with improv-style associated with jazz and the horn-heavy front section that’s the hallmark of big band funk. The energy level is high voltage when this band takes the stage, and as Jambase Online proclaims, “as long as groups like Big Sam’s Funky Nation helm communal happenings like this one the funky fever is bound to spread.” www.bigsamsfunkynation.com

With opening act Rosie Ledet & The Zydeco Playboys. Zydeco Music is most identified by the accordionists who lead the band. Chenier. Chavis. Delafose. Zydeco is male-dominated music, but over the last 12 years, a sultry, sexy female voice has risen through the ranks and established herself as one of the leading voices in Zydeco. Rosie Ledet wouldn't be denied, carving out a unique spot in the Zydeco pantheon, defined more by her special style than that she is one of a handful of female accordionists. Singing in both Creole French and English, Rosie is known for her songwriting ability, as well as her bluesy, sexy singing voice. In fact, her music has often been described as "blues with an accordion." myspace.com/rosieledet

Show time is 8PM.

Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.

Skipper's Smokehouse is located at 910 Skipper Road, Tampa, 813.971.0666.
