Addition: The Moment of Clarity

All Out Repertory Company presents Addiction: The Moment of Clarity, tonight November 13th at 8pm in the Mainstage Theater of HCC Ybor Campus Performing Arts Building.

Come at 7:30 for light refreshments and to see the gallery installation. This is the first full installment in the Addiction Series, a collection of performance, visual and written art that focus on the journey into and out of addiction.

Addiction : The Moment of Clarity features choreography by Shana Perkins, Melissa Torres, Brian Fidalgo and Christina Acosta. Students from Orange Grove Middle Magnet School will perform at the top of the show.

Conceived by Artistic Director and Managing Director, Shana Perkins and Ami Sallee Corley, The Addiction Series has many components. In July, Perkins began working with Lynn Norton from the Hillsborough County Arts Council to create an outreach project with a local halfway house for recovering female addicts to teach them and encouraging them to share their stories.

Perkins and Corley worked with the women for two months, recording their stories and working with them to create a very heartfelt and cathartic dance theater performance that the women shared with their family and friends on a visitation day. Perkins also employed the skills of photographer Jyl Hawver and visual artist Debbie Gadtke to photograph the tattoos of the women, tattoos acquired as a right of passage, and turn them into the scenic design for the November performance as well as an art gallery installation for the lobby. Actor and illustrator Joel Gennari will also contribute to the gallery display. All Out is currently working with the Hillsborough County Arts Council to set up the Gallery Installation.

The November performance will include an infusion of words from the Women of Rose Manor as well as local poet and writer, Lori Karpay, and original music from local bands, Grey Market and Geri X.

Corley has been working with the dancers-who-can-act to bring a dramatic plot line into the performance and a small handful of actors-who-can-dance to act initially as spoken word talent for the November performance and be the actual characters in the Spring performance, which hopes to be featured in the Ybor Festival of the Moving Image in March.

All Out Rep's 1st Tampa-grown production, The Agreeable Husband, had a successful debut performance in April at the 2009 Ybor Festival of the Moving Image and followed up with a fundraiser performance at The Ritz in Ybor in June.

Future performance include a school performance for Blake High School (where Corley and Perkins will work with students to create their own Addiction Series performance piece inspired by the cautionary tale, Go Ask Alice), The Eleanor Dempsey Performing Arts Center in Hudson in February 2010, and The Willow Theatre in Boca Raton in April 2010.

All Out Rep is collaborative production company, mixing and merging art forms: Dance, Theater, Music, Visual and Media Art. All Out is dedicated to expanding Tampa's arts resources and arts audiences through collaboration and touring. www.alloutrep.org

General Admission tickets are $15, for Students (any school) $10, and HCC students, staff, faculty are FREE.

100 Saints You Should Know

The School of Theatre & Dance presents Kate Fodor’s 100 Saints You Should Know, in the Southeast premiere of this “play about human longing.”

Developed at the Steppenwolf Theater Company of Chicago and given its world premiere production at New York’s Playwrights Horizons in 2007, this poignant, sometimes humorous, look at five very different people grappling with questions of faith, meaning and desire provides a potent vehicle for an intrepid company of student actors.

There will be two opportunities for audience members to speak with artists involved in the production. A talkback with the actors and TheatreUSF director Kerry Glamsch will follow the November 14 performance.

On November 19, Kate Fodor, who is a Macy's Visiting Artist this term, will attend the performance and anchor a question and answer session following the show. She will also speak to theatre classes during her visit. Her take on the work is simple: “The play is really about two people: a priest and the woman who cleans the rectory...and her journey toward faith and his away from it.” Directed by TheatreUSF professor Kerry Glamsch.

The play contains adult themes, language and nudity.

Performances are Fridays and Saturdays November 12-14 and 18-21 at 8pm, with 3pm matinees on Sundays November 15 and 22.

Tickets and information may be found at the College of The Arts box office by calling 813-974-2323 or online at www.arts.usf.edu.

Leto & Blake HS Students Perform Spoken Word at Jaeb Theatre TONIGHT
Students from Leto and Blake high schools are joining forces tonight Wednesday November 11 from 6 to 7 p.m. in TBPAC’s Jaeb Theater for a spoken word/dance/art design performance and exhibit that is free for the public.

Students from Leto (who have been working with the comedian, Ranney) will be performing and showcasing their spoken word pieces and students from Blake will display their scenic design projects in the lobby that same day. It should be eye-opening!

Just spoke with Ranney, who said the teens are focusing on the theme Where I Choose to Be and about “how they find the positives and keep themselves and each other going. It’s not all gloomy, but it also doesn’t turn a deaf ear to what going on in their community (such as violence),” he said.

WMNF presents Sarah Borges & The Broken Singles - Tickets on Sale NOW!
On Friday November 20th, WMNF will present Sarah Borges & The Broken Singles with The Eileen Jewell Band opening.

Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles' members claim influences as far-reaching as Mahalia Jackson, Sid Vicious and Merle Haggard, so it's no surprise that the band boasts a unique sound. The group's 2005 debut, Silver City, showcased an unusual knack for mixing alternative rock with country, earning an impressive assortment of critical raves. Some folks make music because they want to -- others do it because they have no choice. Sarah Borges clearly falls into the latter category, the kind of person whose DNA would read like a musical chart if you mapped it out on paper. Diamonds in the Dark, Borges’ second album -- and first for Sugar Hill -- spells that out in lush detail, with every plaintive vocal twist and every rollicking guitar turn offering up proof that the Massachusetts native knows her way around American music’s roots (and has her own roots planted firmly in some mighty fertile soil). While Borges readily acknowledges devouring songs from recordings made decades before she was born -- Wanda Jackson, Bob Wills and vintage Merle Haggard have all been in heavy rotation on her stereo -- she has always offset those influences with the music of the here-and-now. www.sarahborges.com

The Eileen Jewell Band will open. Boise-born and Boston-based, Eileen Jewell has quickly distinguished herself as one of the rising stars of a new generation of roots, country, folk-blues musicians. Her first two albums, Boundary County (self-released, 2006) and Letters from Sinners and Strangers (Signature Sounds, 2007) were astonishingly assured efforts, which matched Jewell’s understated yet insightful songs with a rugged blend of Americana styles. They were met with a great deal of acclaim, with No Depression raving that “Jewell is showing she can wander with the best of them, and write riveting song-stories about her adventures along the way.” Indicative of Jewell’s strong following in Europe, The Word in the UK described her as “A voice of real distinction [that] manages to transcend some powerful influences and pierce the fog long enough for her own point of view to emerge.” www.eileenjewell.com

Two of the outstanding acts at the 2009 Tropical Heatwave come back for a powerful double bill of roots rock. November 20, 2009 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Visit www.wmnf.org.

Bovarnick, Comellas, Neri UT Alumni Show
Three University of Tampa alumni will show their provocative work atan art show in the Scarfone/Hartley Gallery on The University of Tampa campus starting tonight Friday November 6 through December 10, 2009

Rob Bovarnick '85, a well-known local photographer; Chalet Commellas '01, apainter and mixed-media artist; and, a New York painter; will display recent work.

There will be an opening reception and gallery talk with the artists on Friday, November 6, from 7-9 p.m., with an experimental dance by Susan Taylor Lennon.

Before digital alteration became common, Rob Bovarnick created many complexcomposite images on film, images that appeared to have been done digitally. That skill blended seamlessly with the possibilities of the currenttechnology says his former professor Lew Harris.

As a student, Chalet Comellas embraced the challenge of using symbolic imagery in her artwork. She began using motifs that are still evident in herwork today, exploring the use of "feminine" pattern and design elementscoupled with isolated symbols or objects. The larger image tells a storywhile a variation of touch, transparency or layers of images create adeeper, secondary story.

The recent work of Perri Neri is rich in surface, texture, color, motion, expression and symbolism. Flat dark voids are juxtaposed against round warm solids, and vigorous forms harmonize with figures that inhabit several ofthe paintings.

The Gallery is located on North Boulevard on the UT campus. The Gallery is open 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 1-4 p.m. on Saturday. Admissionis free.
