Money for Artists

For years the Arts Council has offered artists grants. Funding from Hillsborough County fell short and the grants had to be suspended for 2011. A lot of artists lamented the loss. The loss was heard and $10,000 was earmarked this year for individual artist grants. The call for applicants went out and as of the deadline, 17 applications were made. Hmmm.

All of the artists are from Hillsborough County and it was nice to see a good range of disciplines with lots of varied projects represented:

dance
film
literary
media arts
music
theatre
visual arts

Applications are in review now with the seven-member panel and scores will be discussed and tabulated at their meeting on Friday, Feb. 17 at the Tampa Museum of Art. Grant winners (a cap of $1000 each) will be announced at the end of the session. Can't wait to hear the panel's scores!

On a related note, though, I'm really curious about something. With all of the comments I heard about the loss of the grants and wanting them to come back, I thought there would be more applications. Inside the Creative Studio Open House Tomorrow

It will be a beautiful afternoon tomorrow to stop in at the Inside the Creative Studio open house at Community Stepping Stones. They'll be showcasing their upcoming series of adult art and creativity classes on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2 - 4 pm. Stepping Stones is located in a beautifully revitalized park on the Hillsborough River in old Sulphur Springs.

Stepping Stones is a long-established community program serving at-risk youth but recently opened studio space and time for a wide range of adult classes from some of the Tampa's most experienced artists. Class fees will help support the CSS program for at-risk youth. It's a great program helping youth in Sulphur Springs see a brighter future. Plus, it gets high humanity points for its many volunteers who believe in what they can accomplish!

Tampa Bay #2 in Arts-related Businesses and Jobs

As of Jan. 1, 2011 more than 3000 arts-related businesses provided 12,362 jobs within Hillsborough County according to the 2011 Creative Industries Report from Americans for the Arts. Enlarging that view to the Tampa Bay region defined by Enterprise Florida (Pinellas, Hillsborough, Sarasota, Polk, Pasco, Manatee, Hernando and Citrus counties) reveals more than 10,000 arts-related businesses that created 38,657 jobs. It's those statistics that put Tampa Bay in the #2 spot behind the 7-county southeast region which principally includes Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. Americans for the Arts points out these numbers should be considered very conservative because they were taken solely from Dun and Bradstreet registered businesses and do not reflect the many artists and not-for-profit arts organizations who often never register with D&B. The actual numbers are higher but harder to track.

Why do statistics about jobs matter? Because more and more funding sources are looking at the economic contribution of the arts, like those numbers above. Increasingly, a traditional business model is being applied during evaluations and reviews to judge the value of the arts. That's part of the reason Americans for the Arts conducted the 2011 Creative Industries Report - to point out the economic contributions being made by the arts. When you're writing grants or looking for funding, include your economic impact statistics when appropriate.

USF CAM Hosts Mark Dion Artist Talk, Exhibition Opens

USF's Contemporary Art Museum announced they are hosting an artist talk in conjunction with the opening of their show, Mark Dion: Troubleshooting.
Mark Dion is an internationally acclaimed, contemporary installation artist whose work, as described by USF, addresses the gulf between popular perception and scientific inquiry. In the PBS documentary series Art 21 his work was described: "[It] examines the ways in which dominant ideologies and public institutions shape our understanding of history, knowledge, and the natural world. 'The job of the artist,” [Dion] says, 'is to go against the grain of dominant culture, to challenge perception and convention.' "

The Conversation with the Artist event promises to be a fascinating discussion among the artist and curators Rene Morales and Jane Simon. Rene Morales is a curator at Miami Art Museum was involved with Dion's large-scale South Florida Wildlife Rescue Unit installation last year. Jane Simon is the curator at USF Contemporary Art Museum. The opening reception for the Dion show follows the artist talk.

Artist Talk, Reception with Jeffrey Kronsnoble, Jan. 12

TECO Public Art Gallery presents an evening with Professor Emeritus Jeffrey Kronsnoble Thursday, January 12 at 4:30-7:30 pm for an artist talk, tour and reception for his solo exhibition ‘Just Good Art’ which runs through January 31. Many in the Bay area are past students of Jeffrey Kronsnoble, who was well-respected during his nearly four-decade long teaching career at USF.

According to Curator Debra Radke, "Jeffrey’s virtuosity as a draftsman, his superb color sensibility, the high impact realism and amazingly sensuous painted surfaces make each of the 18 paintings in this exhibition worth the visit to appreciate, explore and enjoy; whether your preference is for real or abstract, calm or chaotic or somewhere, like life, in between. Kronsnoble has spent years in deliberate practice perfecting his collage technique of combining historical references from the renaissance and elements from the natural world with contemporary figures ..."

The Kronsnoble show runs now through Jan. 31. This artist talk and reception is free and open to the public.

BACKGROUND FROM ARTDAILY: Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jeffrey Kronsnoble earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin, and his MFA from the University of Michigan. Following graduate school, Kronsnoble joined the art department faculty at the University of South Florida in 1963.

Kronsnoble’s work has been featured in one-man shows in galleries in New York, Milwaukee, New Orleans, La Jolla, and throughout Florida, as well as in group shows at the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, D.C., The National Academy of Design in New York City, and The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio.

His work is represented in the permanent collections of art museums in Tampa, St. Petersburg, Orlando, Daytona Beach, and Jacksonville, Florida and New Orleans, Louisiana, as well as in more than 175 public, corporate, and private collections. Kronsnoble has been awarded the William A. Paton and Thomas B. Clarke prizes by The National Academy of Design in New York, and three Individual Artist Grants from the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs.

Networking Meeting Set for Jan. 10, North Tampa

The Arts Council's next networking meeting for artists, members of the arts business community and arts educators is being held in north Tampa at Prodigy Arts(University Area Community Development Corp.) on Tues., Jan. 10, noon - 1 pm. Prior to the usual networking opportunities, an overview of Prodigy Arts, a visual and performing arts program for youth that is a collaboration of the UACDC, University of South Florida School of Social Work, and Bay Area Youth Services, will be presented followed by a tour of the facilities. Professional Performing Artists Awards Announced by Creative Capital Foundation

Good news for professional performing artists: a new multi-year award program from top-tier grantmaker, Creative Capital. This is a multi-year commitment for professionals only. If you are pursuing a serious arts career, you should become familiar with awards programs of this type. Eligibility and requirements are stringent but awards are generous and not only fund projects but concurrently help artists to build their capacity to sustain their careers. Creative Capital offers many such awards programs in rotating cycles to professionals in various disciplines. See http://creative-capital.org.

HIGHLIGHTS OF CREATIVE CAPITAL'S NEW PROGRAM, the Doris Duke Performing Artist Awards, in partnership with the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation:
The Performing Artist Awards, in two categories, supports individual artists in contemporary dance, theater and jazz for extended professional and artistic development. The program is designed to empower, invest in and celebrate notable performing artists, allowing for long-term exploration and research needs unmet by traditional project support.

Artists With Prior Support: Awards will support 100 leading artists with grants of $225,000 of unrestricted funding over a period of three to five years. Not open to application. To be considered by the peer review panel for a Doris Duke Leading Artist Award, artists must have received national support for at least three different projects over a ten-year period, with at least one project having received support from DDCF-funded creation or commissioning programs. Creative Capital and Multi-Arts Production Fund grants count toward an artist’s potential eligibility.

Artists Without Prior Support: An additional 100 awards will be given to artists who have demonstrated the potential to influence their respective fields but have not yet received significant national support. These artists will receive $60,000 in unrestricted funding over a period of two to three years, plus an additional $10,000 for audience development and $10,000 on an incentive-matching basis for retirement savings. This award is also not open to application; artists will be nominated by an anonymous group of peer artists and need not have received prior DDCF funding.

In our previous three grant years, the Arts Council has given more than $1 million to Hillsborough cultural organizations. More than 98% of that has been used to create jobs. Now, however, our programs that ensure a fair and balanced distribution of funds to the arts are struggling to maintain services.

$88 THOUSAND LOSS IN FUNDING

Your support is particularly important when we receive fewer dollars from the government sources we've traditionally depended upon. Again this year the Arts Council's budget was reduced by the County Commissioners. This resulted in a 41% decrease, a loss of more than $88 thousand to arts organizations through our cultural development grant program and a re-examination of our other services.

For the first time, we're asking for your help to maintain our grant programs to artists and arts organizations. Calling Artists to Apply for Local Grants

The Arts Council of Hillsborough County is calling Hillsborough County artists to apply for its 2012 Artist Grants. Grants of up to $1000 each will be awarded. The deadline for applications is Friday, Jan. 20, 2012.

The Individual Artist Grants are awarded to experienced artists in the performing, visual, literary, dance and music disciplines for projects that will further the artist's professional development. Previous grantees have used the award for artistic projects requiring film-making, publishing, equipment purchases, workshops and other endeavors that have taken their career or work to a higher level. Applicants must demonstrate project relevance in their applications.

Candidates must be accomplished creative artists at least 18 years of age and a legal resident of Hillsborough County for 24 consecutive months preceding the deadline. Students pursuing any degree or fulltime faculty in higher education are ineligible.

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011, 6 pm

Artists and arts organizations are invited to attend the November Arts One on One Roundtable at the Tampa Bay Community Network (TBCN) on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 6 pm. TBCN will speak about the services they offer and attendees will get a tour of the facilities. Networking will follow. Located at University Mall, TBCN is a multi-media organization providing video production training, facility and equipment to put messages out on five cable television channels and the Internet. Programming provides in-depth coverage of local and national issues, non-profit services and news of importance to viewers.

TBCN is located on the second floor of the University Mall, between Dillard’s and the food court. Directions: Drive to the Dillard’s side of the mall, park on the second level of the garage. TBCN’s main entrance is just around the corner, along the way to the food court.

The Arts Council is happy to present a two-hour workshop specifically designed for artists.

OCT. 25 - EFFECTIVE MARKETING THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA FOR THE ARTIST

This is two-hour workshop is aimed at individual artists of all experience levels on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 4:30 - 6:30 pm.

Overview: Artists learn to leverage social media to effectively market art, how to build a network to support you and your work, and how to use that network to extend your practice.

This session includes discussions about:

one-to-many vs. many-to-many dialogues
how to separate private and professional online identities and build your online persona (includes an exercise helps participants to define their online personas)
different social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, etc) and what is right for a particular artist
how artists are using social media in a forward thinking way and will employ a brief exercise as well as case studies of artists who are successfully leveraging social media to promote their practice
thinking strategically about your social media participation and minimizing time spent to give you more time to make art.

October is National Arts & Humanities Month

On October 04, 2012, President Barack Obama declared October as National Arts and Humanities Month and stated this about the arts:

“Like Rockwell’s painting, art in all its forms often challenges us to consider new perspectives and to rethink how we see the world. This image still moves us with its simple poignancy, capturing a moment in American history that changed us forever. This is the power of the arts and humanities — they speak to our condition and affirm our desire for something more and something better. Great works of literature, theater, dance, fine art, and music reach us through a universal language that unites us regardless of background, gender, race, or creed.”

CALL TO ARTISTS for YBOR ARTS IN THE PARK

The City of Tampa’s Parks and Recreation Department invites artists to participate in our second annual Ybor Arts in the Park event on Saturday, December 10, 2011 in Centennial Park, 1800 East 8^th Avenue.

This will be a day long event giving artists the opportunity to showcase and sell their artwork in a festival atmosphere in Ybor City, Tampa’s National Historic Landmark District. The event will also include live music, a fresh market, and other holiday events planned for the weekend.

Pre-selected artwork will be formally judged during the event in the morning and winners will be announced for First, Second, Third and Best of Show categories. Cash prizes will be awarded for all four categories. The categories are two dimensional and three dimensional arts in any media. The focus is on quality craftsmanship and bringing fine artists together to promote Ybor City as a fine arts destination.

Artists should submit a resume, with phone number, and artwork (up to five pieces in a digital format) to yborartstudio@tampagov.net. Please include the title of the piece, the media that was used, and dimensions of the piece. If the work is three dimensional, please submit multiple views. If there is more than one person per booth please let us know. There will be a $25.00 booth fee for those selected for the show, booth sites will be selected by a random lottery.

Arts Council of Hillsborough County Calls for Grant Applications

Deadline Sept. 16

The Arts Council of Hillsborough County 2011-12 Cultural Development Grant applications and guidelines are available on the Council's website, TampaArts.com. The Cultural Development Grants are awarded each year on a competitive basis to not-for-profit, tax exempt organizations that provide cultural programs in Hillsborough County.

Five funding levels (including special event) are available and eligibility requirements may be reviewed in the grant guidelines. Funding is awarded based on merit in four areas: overall quality, cultural excellence, public impact and outreach, and financial/administrative.

Grant applications must be received in the Arts Council of Hillsborough County's office before 5 pm, Friday, Sept. 16, 2011. The Arts Council's office is now located in the Tampa Theatre building, 707 N. Franklin St., 6th Floor. Final panel review for applicants will take place on Friday, Oct. 21, 2011. An early review can be scheduled with the Arts Council staff anytime before Sept. 9.

Since 1988, the Arts Council has awarded nearly 900 grants to cultural organizations and individual artists. Last year, however, the Individual Artist Grants program was suspended due to lack of funding. The Council hopes that program will someday return.

The Centre Gallery Presents “ASANTE” - A Visual Response to Africa
The experience of a new culture can often stimulate a unique response to the way we conduct and experience our own lives. Artists Barbara Stubbs and Kendra Frorup hope to expose us to this kind of experience with their unique visual expressions brought to fruition as a response to their own cultural experiences while living and creating art in the African country of Tanzania.

From June 27 through July 8, the Centre Gallery at the University of South Florida will host ASANTE. Stubbs’ and Forrup’s collection will utilize local, Tanzanian materials such as mulberry and fig bark, banana leaves and the cotton fiber of old clothes to express the creativity of the Masai people and the ingenuity of new materials in the artwork. The collection will also include photographs and mono prints made responding to Tanzania.

“We hope to convey the fragility of the ecosystem, respect for diversity and a peek into a worldview, which can best be achieved by global understanding and an appreciation for the beauty of cultural differences.”

WHAT: MOSI’s annual "Field Day," is the climax of the week long "Amateur Radio Week." Thousands of Amateur Radio operators will be showing off their emergency capabilities, applying the newest in digital and satellite technology, voice communications, and even the historical Morse code.

Presented by: MOSI’s Amateur Radio Club and sanctioned by ARRL, the National Association for Amateur Radio. During Hurricane Katrina, Amateur Radio, often called “Ham Radio”, was often the only way people could communicate and hundreds of volunteer “Hams” traveled south to save lives and property.Over the past year, the news has been full of reports of Ham radio operators providing critical communications during unexpected emergencies in towns across America due to wildfires, winter storms, tornadoes, floods, and other events worldwide.

As part of The Florida Orchestra’s recently announced multi-year cultural exchange with Cuba, it has initiated a donation drive to collect musical instruments and accessories to take to Havana for the 300-plus students enrolled in the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory in Havana. The orchestra’s five principal wind musicians, who will be giving master classes at the conservatory and performing in Havana during the last week of September, will be taking the donated instruments and accessories with them. Bay News 9, BrightHouse Networks and the two Tampa Bay area Sam Ash Music Stores are supporting this project.

Music Director Stefan Sanderling said, “Having a cultural and musical exchange with Cuba has been a dream of mine for a number of years. In addition to my concerts there with the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba and their music director coming here to conduct our orchestra, a real exchange means touching the lives of young musicians and encouraging them. Although we will be offering master classes at the conservatory, on a more fundamental level we would like to show our appreciation for the enthusiasm and talent of their students by bringing instruments and accessories that can always be a challenge to obtain at such early stages of a musical career. So, we are inviting our community to join us in making these types of donations for the conservatory.”

Orchestra Board Chair Tom Farquhar added, “The Florida Orchestra is accepting donations of well maintained student instruments or professional instruments in good working order, as well as a variety of needed string and wind instrument accessories for the conservatory. These include violin and viola shoulder rests; strings and bow hair for violins, violas, cellos and double basses; strings for classical guitars; reeds for soprano, alto and baritone saxophones; reeds for oboes and bassoons; and bocals for bassoons, the metal tubes that hold the instrument’s double reed. The local area Sam Ash Music Stores have joined us as partners to assist members of the community in purchasing accessories that they may wish to donate.”

Paul Ash of Sam Ash Music Stores said, “We are pleased to help with this worthy project, not only by offering a convenient location to drop off donated instruments, but we will be assisting the orchestra with maintenance and repairs on the instruments to make sure they are ready for the students to play them when they arrive in Havana. Exhibit Draws on Tampa Bay's Sports History
From the Rowdies to the Rays, experience 70 years of competitive play during Sports in Tampa Bay: Through the Eyes of Lamar Sparkman, a new exhibition opening Saturday, June 18 at the Tampa Bay History Center. Perhaps best known as the creator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' original swashbuckling logo, which fans labeled "Bucco Bruce," Sparkman's drawings of professional and amateur athletes span more than 40 years.

In 2010, the Sparkman family donated more than 200 original drawings by the late cartoonist to the History Center. Those drawings, along with objects from Tampa's professional, collegiate and amateur teams, tell the story of Sports in Tampa Bay: Through the Eyes of Lamar Sparkman. Sports in Tampa Bay is on exhibit June 18 through September 12, 2011 in the Wayne Thomas gallery.

Tim Dorsey Closes Florida Conversations Season

The Tampa Bay History Center welcomes New York Times bestselling author Tim Dorsey to the Florida Conversations Lecture Series on Thursday, June 16 at 6:30 p.m. The lecture is FREE and open to the public.

A former Tampa Tribune reporter and long-time Tampa resident, Dorsey has authored 13 novels including Florida Roadkill (1999) Stingray Shuffle (2003), and The Big Bamboo (2006).

Dorsey's talk, "Florida: A Target-Rich Environment for Writers," will offer a Florida travelogue as only Tim Dorsey could present it.

Third Annual Tampa Unified Auditions Announced

Tampa Bay Area Professional Theater Companies, in association with Hillsborough Community College School of Visual and Performing Arts, announce the Third Annual Tampa Unified Auditions.

Auditions will be held on July 9, 2011 at the Hillsborough Community College Performing Arts Building on the Ybor Campus. These auditions are open to Equity and non-Equity professional actors, recent theater graduates, or those pre-professional actors with a suitable resume.

Auditions are held from 9:00am to 6:00pm, with some of the participating companies holding callbacks starting at 7:00pm. All companies arecasting for their 2011/2012 seasons, or for other upcoming performance opportunities.

The Centre Gallery Presents Obscene Summer - A new light on Censorship
Current cultural views on the ideas of censorship and desensitization open up a vast discourse for interesting conversation. For artist Scott Draft, that is exactly what his upcoming exhibition is all about.

From June 13 through June 24, the Centre Gallery at the University of South Florida will host Obscene Summer. Draft’s collection will utilize digital imagery, painting, and printmaking to create a cultural commentary on current world views of both censorship and desensitization.

“The world around us is highly saturated with ideas that majority leader’s feel could corrupt the minds of the youth and future leaders. However, I believe that mature decisions need to be made by everyone to keep their place in this world,” said Draft. “By providing a visual outlet of material that could be viewed as obscene, the viewer is allowed to interpret censorship in a new light.”

Draft is currently pursuing a BFA in Studio Art, focusing in Experimental Film and Digital Video, with secondary interest in printmaking.

The Obscene Summer reception will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, June 17, in the Centre Gallery at the Marshall Student Center in room 2700, 4202 E. Fowler Ave., Tampa, Fla. Robinson states, “It is my goal that by the end of the night, the daughters will understand that there will be no other man that will love them more than their dads. And as always, the goal is to stress that it’s time for the girls to ‘lower their skirts and raise their standards’.”

“Fathers are busy people that take care of a lot of different things, but during the dance it’s all about the two of us. We get to dress up and learn about one another. Although he always treats me nice, it is the one day for sure that I’m his princess. I know now, when I can start to date, how I should be treated”, Rayna Pegues, 15 year old.

The Florida Orchestra Announces Multi-Year Cultural Exchange with Cuba

Only the Second Tour to Cuba by Members of a U.S. Orchestra Since The Revolution

With Tampa Bay’s rich Cuban heritage and after several months of communications with Cuba’s Music Institute of Havana (Instituto de Música de La Habana), The Florida Orchestra (TFO) has announced that it has initiated a multi-year cultural exchange with Cuba that will include members of the orchestra performing in Havana. The first phase of the exchange is September 26-29, 2011, which will be the first time since 1999 that a professional American orchestra has sent musicians to Cuba, and only the second time since the 1959 revolution.

Activities agreed upon thus far include an ensemble of principal musicians of The Florida Orchestra being invited to give a concert, lead master classes at the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory in Havana and make music with members of the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba. As part of their visit, the musicians will also be taking donated musical instruments and accessories for the conservatory through a donation drive to be conducted by TFO this summer in the Tampa Bay area. Subsequently, the Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba (La Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Cuba), Enrique Pérez Mesa, is scheduled to make his U.S. conducting debut on TFO’s Masterworks series on the 2011/2012 season, and TFO Music Director Stefan Sanderling has been invited to conduct the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba (NSOC) in early 2012. Future aspects of the cultural exchange include featuring Cuban guest artists as well as Cuban composers’ works on upcoming Florida Orchestra’s Masterworks series in Tampa Bay; TFO principal musicians featured as soloists on concerts of the NSOC in Havana; and the goal of sending the entire Florida Orchestra to Cuba to perform as early as the 2012/2013 season.

Music Director Stefan Sanderling remarked, “Music is such a wonderful way to communicate with others, to remind us of our shared feelings and emotions as human beings. It does not matter if you speak different languages or if you are from different cultures. Music can touch people, it can move people, it can bring people together. That is an important part of our cultural exchange with Cuba.”

TFO Board Chair Thomas Farquhar added, “Many members of our community and around the state of Florida are of Cuban heritage with Cuban cultural traditions, music and foods as a part of their daily lives.

Tampa Bay’s history has been enriched by strong ties with Cuba for well over a hundred years, including important Cuban writers, poets, architects, musicians and other artists visiting our area in the first half of the 20th century. As part of our cultural exchange, we hope that we can feature more Cuban composers’ works in our programming and even invite some of Cuba’s performing artists to share the stage with our orchestra.”José Valiente, chair of the task force leading this initiative, said, “Part of this project is also an educational exchange. Our musicians will offer master classes at the conservatory in Havana and have interactions with the musicians from the National Symphony Orchestra. On our first trip this September, our Artistic Administrator David Rogers, who is a composer himself, will be meeting with Cuban composers and performing artists to seek out both Cuban music and artists that we would like to program on future concerts here. And hopefully, some of those artists will conduct workshops and master classes when they visit us. As a gesture of goodwill and as person-to-person diplomacy, we are organizing an instrument and musical accessory donation drive this summer for the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory to assist them in their music education programs.”

As a tangible token of friendship, the five principal musicians of The Florida Orchestra will be taking with them various instruments and accessories to aid students at the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory in Havana. The conservatory’s director Roberto Chorens said, “The Florida Orchestra’s kind offer to volunteer to assist the conservatory would be most appreciated by providing some instruments as well as instrument accessories to maintain the conservatory instruments for the students.” Towards this end, The Florida Orchestra is accepting donations of well maintained student instruments or professional instruments in good working order, as well as a variety of needed string and wind instrument accessories for the conservatory.

September 2011: TFO Ensemble Members Visit Havana

The Florida Orchestra will be sending a wind quintet composed of principal musicians to Cuba the week of September 26-29. With its concert program currently in development, the ensemble will perform a concert in one of Havana’s principal performance venues. The wind players will also offer master classes to students attending the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory in Havana. In addition, TFO’s visiting musicians are looking forward to an opportunity to make music with fellow musicians of the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba. May 2012: Enrique Pérez Mesa Makes US Conducting Debut with TFO

In a markedly Latin flavored program, Music Director of La Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Cuba, Enrique Pérez Mesa, makes his U.S. conducting debut with Florida Orchestra Principal Timpanist John Bannon as the soloist in James Lewis’ Cuban-inspired Cubanitis for solo timpani and orchestra. The program includes two TFO premieres by Cuban composers: Carlos Fariñas’ Penthesilea: Preludio and Guido López-Gavilán’s Ritmotiv. Also on the program is Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1, Classical, whose spirited balletic nature seems to be a perfect complement to the brisk dance rhythms of Mexican José Pablo Moncayo’s Huapango, which is considered Mexico’s second national anthem. These concerts will take place in 2012 on May 11 at David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts’ Carol Morsani Hall, May 12 at the Progress Energy Center for the Arts – Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg, and May 13 at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater.

Born in Matanzas, Enrique Pérez Mesa is one of Cuba’s most recognized conductors internationally. He is the music director of National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba (La Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Cuba) and general director of the Symphony Orchestra of Matanzas (La Orquesta Sinfónica de Matanzas). His career as orchestral conductor began in 1991 working with the Symphony Orchestra of Matanzas, where he developed his conducting craft with Maestra Helena Herrera, participating in both national and international tours. In December of 2002, he was named adjunct director of La Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Cuba by Maestro Leo Brouwer. At that time, he also began to regularly conduct performances of the National Opera and was appointed as the musical director of the National Ballet Orchestra of Cuba. In that capacity, he began working with the internationally renowned Prima Ballerina Alicia Alonso on such major productions as The Nutcracker, Copellia, Swan Lake, Don Quijote and Carmen, as well as the world premiere of Ballet Tula with music by Juan Piñera and choreography by Alicia Alonso. His conducting engagements outside of Cuba have included concerts in Spain, Italy, Austria, France, Brazil, Mexico, Columbia, Chile, Ecuador, Venezuela and Costa Rica, working both with internationally renowned classical artists as well as a variety of important Cuban and international popular artists. He has recorded music for Cuban and Spanish films and has a varied discography, which includes the Grammy nominated Salmo de las Américas by José María Vitier, piano concertos by Spanish composers, Canciones de Buen Amor, Expedición with singer-song writer Silvio Rodríguez, the Cuban recording premiere of Villa-Lobos’ five piano concertos with Cuban pianist Frank Fernández, which won the 2007 Cubadisco Grand Prize; and Ballet “Dionae” by Cuban composer Eduardo Sánchez de Fuentes.

Shipwrecked!

The steamship Isis caught fire and sank near Tampa in 1836. The Kate Dale and the Scottish Chief, two Confederate blockade runners, lie at the bottom of the Hillsborough River. The Evening Star went down at Clearwater in 1872. Shipwrecked!, a new course offered by the Tampa Bay History Center, dives beneath the surface to uncover hundreds of years of maritime history in West Central Florida.

Conducted by Jeff Moates, USF Faculty member and Regional Director of the Florida Public Archaeology Network, Shipwrecked! meets Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m., June 1 - 15. Cost is $30. Winner of Local Artist Label Design Contest Announced; Top Ten Label Design Finalists on Display

Cigar City Brewing (CCB) and Hampton Arts Management will host a release party for CCB’s Tocobaga Red Ale on Wednesday, June 1 2011 at the Cigar City Brewing Tasting Room (3924 West Spruce St, Suite A Tampa, FL 33607) from 7PM – 10PM. The event features the unveiling of the winning design in the 2011 local artist label design competition, an exhibition for the top ten label design finalists, and the first availability of the Tocobaga Red Ale in bottles. The Tocobaga beer was the subject of the 2011 Cigar City Brewing local artist label design competition.

Hosted by Hampton Arts Management, the contest drew nearly 60 entries from more than 30 artists in the Tampa Bay area. Label designs were juried by guest judge Todd Smith, Executive Director at the Tampa Museum of Art, along with representatives from CCB and Hampton Arts Management. The winning label design will be featured on the initial bottle release of the Tocobaga Red Ale with the artist receiving a $500 prize plus a case of beer featuring their artwork.

The Tocobaga Red Ale will be available in 750mL bottles for $9/bottle and on draft for $5. The first 80 people to purchase a bottle of the Tocobaga Red Ale will receive a limited edition bottle signed by the winning artist and Cigar City Brewing founder Joey Redner. In addition to the announcement of the winning label, the event also includes a display of the top ten entries from the label design competition.

Finalists include: Alexander Kusminov, Aris Literati, Chris Findeisen, Daniel Williams, Eric Swanson, Jody Beck, Lisa McKibbon, Pattie Smith, Ricky Peterika, and Susan LaPlante. The multi-award winning and nationally lauded local brew house Cigar City Brewery has been proud to continue its support of Tampa Bay area arts, culture and history through this project.

Founded in 2009, CCB aims to create the best beers in the world and to share the fascinating culture and heritage of the Cigar City of Tampa. Led by Tampa native Joey Redner with Wayne Wambles as head brewer, Cigar City Brewing has quickly become a staple of local culture and an important asset for the Tampa Bay community.

Presented by: Miguel A.L. Nicolelis, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Neurobiology,Biomedical Engineering and Psychological and Brain Sciences. Dr. Nicolelis has devoted his career to the search for the physiological principles that govern the interaction of large populations of neurons in behaving animals. Concept:

The Cuban Sandwich Show is conceived as an annual event held for one full month each summer in numerous venues throughout Tampa, featuring art in all media including the visual arts, music, poetry, film, theater, cuisine…ALL the works must have “Tampa” as the subject in some direct way. The work can be new or shown in previous shows. The artist can prepare as many works (including copies of photographs) as they wish for any or all the venues. The curators will select work based on adherence to the criteria, quality, and appropriateness to each venue’s availability of space.

The Art:

In general the art we are looking for is personally meaningful to the artist and not commercial. We are looking for fresh perspectives about our fair city; we welcome work that is intense, aggressive, experimental, satirical, humorous, whimsical, political, honest. And ready to hang.

Artists and Selection:

The final decision as to what and where artworks will be shown will be determined by curator David Audet and the Artists and Writers Group staff, and/or each venue’s curator. Artists who have participated in other Cuban Sandwich Shows have been invited to show works. There is also an open invitation to everyone (call-for-entries). The artist does not have to live in Tampa or be from Tampa. The work has to be about Tampa. Some venues are curating and producing their own shows.

Entry Fee:

None. The Artists and Writers Group, Inc received a small grant from the Ybor City Development Corporation this year to help us get started (your tax dollars at work!). In future years, we will probably have a small entry fee to fund the event. If the artist sells a work, a small percentage (5%?) can be donated to the Artists and Writers Group for future projects such as Deep Carnivale Literature Festival.

Dates:

The basic schedule for the full Cuban Sandwich Show is June 1-30, 2011.

However, the actual dates are unique to each venue. Details about each venue are listed below.

Each artist will sign a simple release form allowing the Artists and Writers Group, Inc to show the work for this one exhibition. All rights belong to the artist. We will ask for permission to take photographs of work and display on our website and for use promoting the show and for the media and newspapers. All sales and commissions are the responsibility of the artist. Each venue has its own liability policy. The Artists and Writers Group will handle the work with care but cannot be held responsible for any damage or loss.

TAMPA THEATRE SUMMER CLASSICS

June 5 - August 28, 2011

Tampa Theatre’s popular Summer Classics runs from June 5 though August 28, featuring 13 classic movies on Sunday afternoons at 3pm (plus bonus Saturday at 3pm screenings of CASABLANCA and SING-ALONG WIZARD OF OZ). The series includes restored 35mm prints of THE GRAPES OF WRATH, THE GODFATHER, THE AFRICAN QUEEN, BRINGING UP BABY, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL and THE RED SHOES.

For SING-ALONG WIZARD OF OZ audiences will be encouraged to sing along with the on-screen lyrics and those in costume will be invited to join the Audience Costume Parade on stage before the movie.

As always, the Summer Classics wraps up with a silent film featuring live musical accompaniment with the Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ. This summer, Tampa Theatre presents one of the best silent films for the whole family, PETER PAN (1924), the first film adaptation of the classic by J. M. Barrie. This charming film also dazzles with remarkable special effects (as impressive today as they were in 1924). Cheering, jeering, gasping and laughing out loud are heartily encouraged!

PRE-SHOW THEATRE MINI TOURS: The movies start at 3pm, but theatre opens at 2pm when moviegoers can join a Tampa Theatreologist for a short jaunt around theatre. These volunteers have earned a degree in all things Tampa Theatre – history, architecture, quirky details, funny stories, etc. At about 2:40, the Tampa’s magnificently resorted 1,400-pipe Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ roars to life, ascending from beneath the stage. Volunteers with the Central Florida Theatre Organ Society perform popular tunes.

POST FILM TALKS: Moviegoers who want to learn more and talk about what they’ve just seen may stay for Post Film Talks after selected movies. Harriet Deer (Professor Emeritus, English, USF) will offer her expert insights on the cast, production, themes and cultural significance of six summer classics: SPELLBOUND ( June 12), A PLACE IN THE SUN (June 19), THE GODFATHER (June 26), CASABLANCA (July 10), THE AFRICAN QUEEN (July 31), and BRINGING UP BABY (August 7). She served as vice president of the Popular Culture Association of America and chair of the Modern Language Association section on popular culture. She also co-edited one of the first books on the popular arts.

Michael Foley (Assistant Professor Modern / Dance History, USF) will speak after THE RED SHOES (8/21). A master teacher and choreographer, he has taught workshops and master classes at universities, academic institutions and private studios throughout the United States, Italy, France, The Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Mexico, Panama and Cuba.

WHAT TIME SHOULD I ARRIVE?
Way before the film begins. Tampa Theatre's Cinema Snacks tents will open two hours before the movie starts. Part of the fun will be arriving early to picnic, toss a Frisbee, people-watch and enjoy the early evening with your friends and neighbors. Prior to the film, you might even see yourself on the big screen as snapshots of guests at the park are flashed upon the screen.
WHAT IF I AM PLANNING TO COME WITH A LARGE GROUP?
We do not reserve space for groups. We recommend a member of your group arrive early and lay out blankets for your group.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
Along with your friends and family, you might want to bring blankets, compact beach or lawn chairs, your own snacks, beverages, and rain gear if the weather is iffy. Shows in the Fall and Winter can be very cold, even here in sunny Florida. Consider bringing warm clothes or an extra blanket or two. If you like to toss nerf balls or Frisbees, bring them. If you like to read, bring a book to read prior to sunset and the start of the movie.
WHAT ITEMS ARE NOT PERMITTED?
Beer, wine and alcoholic beverages, fireworks and firearms are prohibited by city ordinance.
CAN I BRING MY DOG(S)?
Well-behaved pets are allowed as long as they are kept on a leash. Please clean up after your pets. We love our dogs just as much as you, but we will revisit our policy if pet owners are inconsiderate of others, or if the large crowds, darkness and abrupt loudness of the movies make pets disruptive to others.
WHAT FOOD, BEVERAGES AND MERCHANDISE WILL BE AVAILABLE?
We will provide all Sunset Cinema concessions and merchandise booths, offering popcorn ($2), candy ($3), soft drinks ($1) Gatorade, bottled water ($2), and juice boxes for the kids ($1). Fun souvenirs like official Sunset Cinema Frisbees and picnic blankets will also be available. Proceeds from concessions and merchandise sales help support Tampa Theatre’s year-round artistic and educational programming, and offset the cost of producing Sunset Cinema events.
WHAT ARE THE SEATING ARRANGEMENTS?
Sunset Cinema events are free and open to all with the seating location of your choice. All Sunset Cinema events will be produced in park settings which will have a large expanse of open grass. You may bring your own blankets, low profile camp chairs, beach chairs, and lawn chairs.
Tampa Theatre will have available for purchase Sunset Cinema commemorative picnic blankets ($20).
HOW WILL THE FILMS BE SHOWN?
We project our movies on a high-quality digital rear-projection system on a giant, inflatable 50-foot wide screen. Dual, synchronized digital projectors will produce an image that is luminous and crisp, and a powerful sound system will allow guests to enjoy the movie from almost anywhere in the park.
WHERE ARE THE RESTROOMS?
Portable sanitation units will be provided.
WHAT HAPPENS TO LOST PROPERTY?
We will try our best to get things back to their rightful owners. Please notify someone at the Information Booth before you leave to report any lost items and leave your details with them. If you find anything nearby that you think might have been lost, please bring it to the Information Booth.
WHERE DO I THROW AWAY MY TRASH?
Trash and recycling receptacles will be provided. Please clean up after yourself, being careful not to dump ice in the park.
WHAT HAPPENS IF IT RAINS?
The Tampa area is known for the scattered showers that are prominent during the late afternoons. The dark sky can intimidate and it may look grim for an outdoor movie, but don't let that scare you away. We will show a movie in light rain. Flooding may require us to adjust our location within the park slightly, but we will only stop the show for safety reasons if there are very strong winds or lightning in the vicinity. Otherwise...the show will go on!
If you come prepared and can get through any bumps in the weather, the outdoor movie experience will be extremely rewarding. Don't forget rain ponchos and jackets, blankets or sleeping bags to fend off any chillier night air.

Florida Conversations

The History Center welcomes Historian Daniel Schafer on Sunday, May 22 at 3 p.m. Schafer will discuss his latest book, Thunder on the River: The Civil War in Northeast Florida. Invaded four times by Federal forces and used as a staging ground for an ill-fated Union invasion of the Florida interior known as the Battle of Olustee, Jacksonville bore the brunt of Florida's Civil War-era bloodshed. In Thunder on the River, Schafer chronicles Florida's often-neglected role in the War Between the States.

Co-sponsored by the USF Libraries Florida Studies Center and supported by WUSF Public Media, Florida Conversations features authors and presenters covering a variety of Florida topics, from politics to fiction, history to environmental issues. Florida Conversations is free and open to the public.

Tampa’s 2nd Annual Bloomsday

The Tampa Bay Arts & Education Network is hosting Tampa’s second Bloomsday, a celebration of all things Joycean. Named after Ulysses’ central character, Leopold Bloom, Bloomsday marks the day on which the action of the novel takes place, June 16th, and follows the life and thoughts of Bloom and a host of other colorful characters as they travel through the streets of Dublin and the corners of their minds.

“Our goal is to have fun with Joyce. So many people are intimidated by Ulysses and we want to show that literature, even scary tomes like this, can be joyous, especially with the right company,” said Lucy Griggs, Program Director of TBAE Network. “This is an evening of fun with limericks, music and group readings, celebrating the joy of reading in the company of friends. “

The very first Bloomsday was celebrated in Ireland in 1954, the fiftieth anniversary of the first Bloomsday, when the writers Patrick Kavanagh and Flann O’Brien visited locations like the Martello Tower at Sandycove, Davy Byrne’s pub, and 7 Eccles Street, reading parts of Ulysses and drinking a great deal as they went! Today, Bloomsday is celebrated by Joyceans across the globe with readings, performances, re-enactments, and a host of other events. In Dublin, enthusiasts dress in Edwardian costume and gather during the day at many of the locations where episodes of Ulysses take place. In Tampa, we’ll celebrate Joyce and all things Irish with a lovely supper and a grand old pint, followed by traditional Irish music performed live by the Irish Buskers.

Joyce to the World, a documentary about Bloomsday, will be aired on TBAE Network as part of the local celebration. This delightful film explores the phenomenon of “Bloomsday,” an annual celebration of James Joyce’s groundbreaking novel Ulysses. Walk through the streets of Dublin in the hero Leopold Bloom’s footsteps and experience Irish culture and tradition with other lovers of great literature.

About the Irish Buskers

The Irish Buskers is a five-person Celtic music band that plays some songs that are traditional, some that are melodic and sweet, some well-known sing-along pub songs, some raucous noisy bits, and a few original songs.

The Buskers' set list includes everything from the traditional instrumentals. Planxty Irwin and Irish Washerwoman to the well-known Raglan Road and Wild Mountain Thyme to the raucous Some Say the Devil is Dead and the Pogues’ The Boys from the County Hell.
The Buskers have been known to throw in a few limericks (mostly PG-rated) at performances.The Irish Buskers formed in Tampa in 2007 as a six-person band. Founding Busker John Hooper moved to Texas in 2008. Since forming to play a St. Patrick’s Day event, the Buskers have performed around the Tampa Bay area, tending to be busiest in March.

Working in collaboration with VSA Start with the Arts curriculum and the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County’s KidzCreate Gallery, the Glazer Children’s Museum educational staff will use arts and literary activities to engage children in expressing concepts, thoughts and feelings about the community in which they live.

Our global, multicultural and multiethnic society offers many ways of increasing children’s understanding of different viewpoints, ways of living and tolerance. As represented in this exhibition, the arts provide easy access to expanding our children’s views of where they live, and ultimately the world. Art sessions are open to all Glazer Children’s Museum visitors, including local school groups, and are included in your museum admission. Moving Current will celebrate Florida’s contemporary dance artists with another sensational concert of professional and up and coming choreographers on NewGrounds 2011. This year’s artists include choreographers such as Tampa native Casey Hicks and Lakeland choreographer Shelley Bourgeois (also a member of Moving Current). Joining them are Florida State University graduates Jessica Mayhew and Trent D. Williams Jr., FSU dance major Joshua Reaver and Jacksonville choreographers Cari Coble, Tiffany Sullivan Fish and Rebecca Levy.

“This year, the quality of dance work is outstanding.” stated Moving Current Director, Erin Cardinal. “The applicants were reviewed by a panel of dance professionals who were not given the names of the choreographers, the works were chosen based on the title, a brief statement about the work and what was presented on the DVDs. The names of the artists were revealed later in the process.”

NewGrounds began in 2001 by Moving Current directors when they decided to fill the need for choreographers to present their work, help connect Florida choreographers and ultimately support and nurture modern dance in the State of Florida. Ten years later, Moving Current still has an important need to fill for the many talented and diverse choreographers living, studying and working in Florida. The dances brought to this year’s NewGrounds stage are thoughtful, exciting work with a wide range of contemporary dance styles. There will be something for everyone to love. A new experience, a journey to somewhere new... If you’ve seen NewGrounds in the past, you definitely won’t want to miss the 2011 edition. It’s the perfect way to celebrate new voices in the art of dance… together in Tampa!

And that’s not all…Along with the weekend performances, NewGrounds 2011 will offer a Master Class Series May 18-22 taught by Miami’s Brazz Dance Theater Artistic Director Augusto Soledade and distinguished professor and former dancer with the Jose Limon Dance company, Andre Megerdichian. Al classes are held at the USF dance studios, Holly Dr. Tampa.

Join us for Show & Tell, an opportunity for artists to share their dance works with the community. The choreographers are invited to participate in a quick open response directly following the performance of their work with distinguished contemporary choreographers leading the audience in discussion. MOSI Hosts 4th Annual Hurricane Expo

Hurricane Expo helps prepare residents for hurricane season

The Museum of Science & Industry will host the 4th annual Hurricane Expo on Saturday, May 21, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Hurricane Expo is an event produced in conjunction with the City of Tampa and Hillsborough County and it serves to inform and educate the public on the importance of making plans in preparation for any emergency in a fun, family-oriented environment. This year’s theme focuses on the Tampa Bay Hurricane of 1921 and will feature photos from that storm, how technology has changed since then and how a storm like that could affect us today.

The expo will feature multiple vendors who provide either hurricane protection and/or survival products or services to the community. In addition to the vendor booths, MOSI will have a meteorologist panel for two Q & A sessions featuring our very own local TV meteorologists. For the children, there will be a bouncy house and balloon animal making.

While visiting the Hurricane Expo, there are many other fun exhibits at MOSI for guests to experience. Visitors can experience what it feels like to endure 75 mph hurricane force winds in the Gulf Coast Hurricane exhibit located outside at MOSI. Another great educational opportunity for guests to learn more about natural disasters is Disasterville. Disasterville is located on the second floor of MOSI and features 10,000 square feet of interactive exhibits and immersion theaters on the science behind natural disasters including hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, wild fires and much more!

New Work: Pareidolia ?
WTCA proudly announces art work straight from the varied studios of local artists and seen in the area for the very first time. This highly energetic exhibition affords the viewer a rare opportunity to see the very latest work of over 10 of today's most exciting and innovative early career artists working in installations, photography, sculpture, mixed media. An event not to be missed.

Highlights of the exhibition include a David Smith sculpture and chromogenic installation of time exploding; a series of diaristic saturated scenes illuminating the dark reality of maintained existence through substance by Jillian Corey Katz; a Keith Parsons photographic mural of the personal transitions through the death of his closest grandmother; new 4x5 negative dark nightmare-in-wonderland photographs from Emelle Lee; a large scale Leslie Upham sculpture based on the merging of organic life with constructed reality; Tina Koufas-Eisenbacher's transparency layered predictions of greyhounds in gas masks populating anti-worlds to come; and sculptural work of the visceral comfort in between these realities by Emily Silvis.
